Chatfield Golfers,
I hope that you all had a great winter. I’m excited about the weather warming up and the golf season getting underway! In this email I hope to provide all the information necessary for the upcoming fall season along with offseason opportunities. I apologize for the lengthy email, but I want to make sure I cover everything for the next couple months. To the best of my knowledge, I have included everyone from last season along with all interested incoming freshmen that I have heard from. If you know of anyone else interested in trying out for the Chatfield Boys Golf team, please feel free to forward this email to them! Conversely, if you are receiving this email and do intend to participate in the fall please let me know so I can remove you from my distribution list.
VERY IMPORTANT!!!
If you intend to tryout for the Chatfield Boys Golf Team this fall, please fill out this Google Form:
Tryout google form
This is extremely important to ensure your tee times for tryout week. Unlike other sports that take place on school property, I have to reserve tee times months in advance at area golf courses. Because of this, it is vital for me to know who intends to participate in tryouts.
Program Overview
At Chatfield, we field 3 teams. A varsity team that will compete against all other Jeffco 5A schools; a JV team that participates in tournaments against other South Jeffco schools; and a Level 3 Team that competes in the Gold Crown Foundation 9 hole tournament series throughout the fall. This season we intend to keep 16 golfers with those numbers flexible depending on the scores during tryouts. Seniors need to score in or near the top 5 scores to be eligible to make the team. Since we can only field 5 players for each Varsity event, it becomes very difficult to find events for seniors to participate in if they are unable to qualify for Varisty tournaments.
Important Dates
Monday, May 9th - Meet & Greet @ Foothills Golf Course Range (4:30 PM), Stand Up Parent Meeting/Q&A (5:15 PM)
This will serve as an opportunity for the coaching staff to catch up with returning golfers and meet new golfers intending to tryout. I will purchase a large bucket of balls for any Chatfield golfer that shows up. I will host a brief, stand up parent meeting at the back of the range to give an overview of the program and answer any questions about the upcoming season.
Wednesday, June 29th - Volunteer Day @ Columbine Country Club (10:00-5:00)
Chatfield golfers will help with the Columbine CC youth program by walking the Par 3 course with the golfers. Lunch will be provided. All volunteers will have the opportunity to play Columbine CC at a date and time to be determined in the fall. I will have a limited number of spaces available for this event. Priority will be given to returning players and uppreclassmen.
Monday, August 1st - Range Time and Play Test @ Foothills Golf Course (4:00)
Coaches will be on the driving range at 4:00 to chat with players about tryout week. Tee times for the play test start at 5:00 PM. Players will be required to shoot under 50 on the Par 3, keeping a proper tournament score and counting all strokes. I encourage all players to go through this several times throughout the summer to alleviate any pressure from this round.
Tuesday, August 2nd - Tryout Round 1 @ Meadows Golf Course (12:00)
Tee times will start at noon. All players trying out for Varsity/JV will play 18 holes, Level 3 tryouts will consist of a 9 hole round.
Wednesday, August 3rd - Tryout Round 2 @ Homestead Golf Course (12:00)
Tee times will start at 1 PM. All players trying out for Varsity/JV will play 18 holes, Level 3 tryouts will consist of a 9 hole round. Following the round players will be informed of team placement or any cuts if necessary
Thursday, August 4th - 1st Practice @ Meadows Golf Course (3:00-4:30) & Parent Meeting @ Chatfield(5:30)
Summer Work
The only way to improve in this difficult game is to be persistent in your practice and competitive play in the summer. I highly encourage all players to seek out ways to play in tournaments this summer. If that is not possible, finding the time to get to a course regularly is vitally important. I always tell the team in the fall that if you do nothing but spend an hour a day chipping and putting through the summer, you will be shocked at how much you improve (this can be done for free at any area public course).
Here are some options to seek out for competitive play this summer:
Gold Crown Golf Foundation: A great way to introduce yourself to competitive golf tournaments. This is a great starting point for any players new to tournament golf.

Colorado PGA Junior Golf: A more competitive and extensive summer series of events.

In addition to all of this, I hope to host some play days at area courses throughout the summer on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. While it is dependent on lining up schedules, I hope to play at least 9 holes with every player that intends to try out in the fall. I think this gives me a good opportunity to see players' ability prior to tryouts and hopefully creates a more comfortable and inclusive environment when the season starts in the fall. I will be sending out selective emails throughout the summer in hopes of achieving this.
